We are looking for artists to participate in a one year art-based documentary empowerment program for youth ages 9-15. A core element of the program is art and creative expression. Students will collaborate with artists to visually storyboard their thoughts and experiences using a variety of artistic mediums. Throughout the year, these youth will be engaged in a creative process that integrates artistic expression, dialogue, and documentary filmmaking. Program activities will focus on individual and group exploration of identity, belonging, cultural heritage, creative agency, resilience and well-being. Groups will work on both individual and collaborative projects, facilitating healthy and supportive peer relationships.
Small groups will meet 2 hours/week after school with one artist, a group assistant, and sometimes filmmakers. Subject experts will join groups for 15-45 minute time periods.
The Artist is responsible for:
- engaging children in artistic activities that help them gain creative and technical skill,
- collaborating with the group assistant and filmmakers to create a learning environment that:
- is culturally responsive,
- facilitates mentorship and relationship development,
- highlights the children’s voices, ideas, interests, and emerging self,
- leads to self-confidence in self-expression, and
- children experiencing a strong sense of belonging.
- joining group in ~4 field trips/year,
- planning and supporting exhibitions of group’s artwork ~every 6 weeks
Artist selection will be based on artistic, teaching, and communication skill, and on demographics and lived experience consistent with the youth population. This will provide these youth with access to a large and diverse choice of potential mentors
